At some point of your life, either after a bad haircut or before an important event, you have probably wondered how to grow your hair overnight. And although, unfortunately, it isn’t exactly an option — there are ways to grow healthy, beautiful hair in a rather short period of time. There isn’t one single hair growth secret, however, there are a few tricks you could incorporate into your hair care routine on a daily basis:
1. Avoid washing your hair with hot water.
The hot water compromises the hair’s ability to protect itself from damage, and also destroys the components that your scalp secretes that acts as a natural conditioner. The hot water takes away the moisture from your hair, leaving it dry and vulnerable. On the other hand, rinsing your hair with cold water will seal the moisture in your hair and keep it hydrated.
2. Try Biotin
One of the best natural supplements for hair growth is Biotin. Not only does it help your hair grow faster and thicker, it also helps make your nails significantly stronger. And while Biotin naturally occurs in foods like wheat, eggs, dairy, nuts, chicken and salmon that is recommended to include into your daily diet — it is also possible to take Biotin supplements in order to increase and accelerate your hair growth.
3. Give your hair some rest
From time to time, give it a break from dyeing, perming, blow drying, styling and even just a break from certain hairstyles: frequently putting your hair into a tight ponytail or high bun weakens the hair follicles and impairs blood circulation in the scalp, and thus the hair nutrition. Also keep in mind that your hair feels best when it is allowed to dry naturally.
4. Rethink your diet
One of the major factors in your hair growth consists in your diet. In order to achieve the long, beautiful, healthy hair of your dreams — try eating more nuts, eggs and fatty fish, such as salmon. Proteins, vitamins and omega-3 acids are the best foods that are stimulating hair growth.
5. Protect your hair from UV damage
The same way you protect your skin, it is recommended to protect your hair from the UV light. Not only does the hair “burn out” in the sun, but it also becomes drier — the sunlight damages the structure of your hair. Dyed hair is particularly vulnerable in this case, so be sure to use an SPF or a protective spray in order to shelter your hair from the damaging sunlight.
6. Treat your wet hair as carefully as possible
When your hair is wet it can be very easily damaged. Even combing or harsh towel drying can damage the protective upper layer of the cuticle of the hair. Try using products with oils and amino acids: they will help protect your hair from such damage.
7. Skip a few days in between shampooing
Shampooing your hair on a daily basis leads to excessive breakage, as well as loss of moisture in your hair through stripping your hair of its natural oils. Consider shampooing your hair a little less often — research suggests that the optimal amount ranges between 2-3 times per week.
8. Substitute some of your hair care products with more natural alternatives
It is no secret that most hair care products are packed with harmful chemicals that might improve the appearance of your hair in the short run, but it will negatively impact the quality and growth of your hair in the long run. Instead of going for store-bought hair products, consider establishing a more natural hair routine. For instance, try using essential oils such as coconut of castor oils.
9. Try massaging your scalp
Massaging your scalp plays an important role in stimulating hair growth. Experts advise devoting at least five minutes a day to a scalp massage in order to promote growth and strengthen the hair in the follicles, as well as increasing hair volume. Something as simple as massaging your scalp with a soft hairbrush for a few minutes a day can make a huge difference in the way your hair looks.
